Position Summary

The Health Assistant/EMT will provide support for College Health Services during office hours, and be on call to respond to emergency calls when the office is closed. The role of this employee will be to provide efficient and immediate care to the critically ill and injured, and under established guidelines, this person may monitor impaired students in the impaired student holding area.

*Ability to converse in English with coworkers and ambulance personnel as to status of patient. (Minimum)
*Certified in CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer or Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Professional (Minimum)
*Possession of a valid driver’s license. (Required)

Education

*If a student, must maintain a 2.0 or higher grade point average. (Minimum)
*Must possess a current EMT Certification for the state of Pennsylvania or be able to transfer certification to the state of Pennsylvania. (Minimum)
*Maintain required certification by attending continuing education hours mandated by the state of Pennsylvania. (Minimum)

Experience

*One (1) year as an active Emergency Medical Technician or equivalent experience in the medical field. (Minimum)

Responsibilities and Duties

-Be knowledgeable of College emergency procedures and act accordingly. (Essential)
-Receive calls from dispatcher. (Essential)
-Read maps, may drive ambulance to emergency sites. (Marginal)
-Observe traffic ordinances and regulations when responding to and returning from emergencies. (Essential)
-Respond verbally en route to emergency calls. (Essential)
-Assist in lifting carrying and transporting patients to the ambulance if needed. (Essential)
-Provide additional emergency care following established protocols or medical direction if required. (Essential)
-Report nature of illness or injury to receiving medical facility. (Essential)
-Report verbally and in writing, observations and care of patient at the scene to emergency personnel responding to campus. (Essential)
-Replace/stock supplies. (Essential)
-Check all equipment/supplies for future readiness/response. (Essential)
-Maintain EMS UTV/Special Unit in operable condition. (Essential)
-Ensure cleanliness and orderliness of equipment and supplies. (Essential)
-Decontaminate UTV/Special Unit interior as needed. (Essential)
-Maintain familiarity with all specialized equipment. (Essential)
-Serve in the impaired student holding area (ISRA) and Emergency Medical Services (Station34) thru (College Health Services) overseeing impaired students who may present a danger to themselves and are unable to return safely to their residences. (Essential)
-Provide necessary care and observe condition of impaired students monitoring for the need for additional medical services. (Essential)
-Remove soiled linens and provide appropriate care to patients in the Health Center. (Essential)
-Attend meetings to address concerns; critique medical charts with the College Health Services Director; attending training sessions as required. (Essential)

*Ability to bend, stoop and crawl on uneven terrain.
*Ability to withstand varied environmental conditions such as heat, cold and moisture.
*Ability to work in low light and confined spaces.

Special Job Features

*As-needed, not to exceed 18 hours per week.
*On call when College Health Services is closed or as scheduled for special events.
*EMTs will be paged through Lycoming County Communications Center or the Penn College Police Department based on the origin and acuity of the call.
*Calls may originate from Health Services based on patient presentation
*EMTs will be scheduled in advance for Special Events.
*This position is subject to a background check.
